I was born in Leicester and trained to be a mechanical engineer at a building company in that city. It was a very good grounding as I learnt how cars, plant and commercial vehicles worked; no worries about emissions in those days and this gave me a love for all things mechanical including steam.
In 1967 I moved to the Bournemouth area and in 1973 started working for myself, I remained self-employed until I retired in 2005. During this working period, ably assisted by my wife Pauline, we ran trucks and a repair workshop.
TVRs came into my life in 1998 it must have been a mid life crisis. I had sold my lovely BMW 535 Sport and decided I wanted an open top sports car. After travelling the country looking for a good condition Healey 3000 and not finding one I gave up!!! Luckily the boss suggested I should buy a more modern sports car. Remembering a Top Gear program where a certain Jeremy Clarkson had tested a Chimaera which made such a lovely noise I thought that’s for me; so we went looking. We spotted a Chimaera in Halcyon Atlantis, which sadly was sold, but we decided that was the colour we wanted. The search started and we found what we wanted at the old Central Garage Birmingham, she was just six weeks old and I still own this lovely car.
I joined the TVR car club in about 2003 and some six to eight years ago we became more active in the life of the Dorset branch and what a great old time we have had!
So John retires as RO and John becomes RO, retiring John has done a great job, I just hope I can manage to maintain his high standards.
